Let Freedom Ring?
If you live in the US, today is Independence Day.
But I don’t know about you, I’m not exactly in a “stars and stripes” kind of mood. It’s hard to celebrate a country founded on genocide—one that continues to fund and support violence and oppression around the world. Ya feel me?
Still, I found something else to celebrate today: being alive.
Like most days, I celebrated by walking to my favorite surf break—Beginner’s Bay (though with the current swell, it’s feeling more like Intermediate Bay).
As I made my way there, I found myself reflecting on what freedom really means to me.
Here’s what I came up with:
– Waking up without an alarm.
– Structuring my day based on energy, client work, personal projects, and tides.
– Moving and nourishing my body in ways that feel good.
– Working on projects that align with my values.
As I paddled out to las bombas—what the locals call the massive swell rolling in—whitewash slammed into my face.
Half sincere, half sarcastic, I shouted into the ocean:
“PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DROP LOVE—NOT BOMBAS.”
And then I remembered—somewhere, right now, families are sheltering from real bombs. My heart sank. Here I was, playing in the water, while others were just trying to survive.
Eventually, I made it past the break and caught one of the most beautiful waves of my life.
I stood up, flew across the crest, and even had the presence of mind to throw my hands in the air mid-ride—a full-bodied celebration of being alive.
I rode that puppy all the way to shore… only to be promptly swallowed by the tide and spit out like a rag doll.
Humbled. Grinning.
Was that freedom ringing—or just my swimmer’s ear?
And now for a VERY SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT….
My book is finally out. IT’S OUT.
A more official announcement is coming soon, but I couldn’t miss this opportunity to share my excitement. And honestly, what better day to share it than today? After all, the book is all about redefining freedom on your own terms.
Here’s what one reviewer had to say:
“A simply beautiful and powerful testament to living a life of truth, light, and freedom.” — Mahlet Mengistu, Book Reviewer
